Okay this is a rant with spoilers because I'm sorry this has literally been out for almost 90 years. And if you haven't read the book and want to see the movie then seriously stop reading this and go read the damn book. It's barely 50,000 words and it seriously doesn't take that long to read.
 
The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books. There's a reason it's called the great American novel. I knew I was going to get really pissed off when the movie came out because it's a blockbuster movie and the way it's advertised is aimed at people who haven't read the book. But I'm seriously going to scream the next time I see a 14 year old white girl say that Gatsby isn't that exciting and it would be better as a love story when she hasn't even read the god damn book.
 
THE POINT OF THE BOOK ISN'T THAT GATSBY LOVES DAISY. HE DOESN'T. HE LOVES THE IDEA OF DAISY AND THE WORLD SHE REPRESENTS. In fact if you look at how he "loves" her all he is doing is objectifying her which is. not. love.
 
If all you get from the movie is that you want to party like that, have a "love" (seriously what the f.ck they're "love" is so f.cked up) like that, and be as rich as them then you have missed the entire point of the movie. Fitzgerald wrote the book during 1925, at the height of American debauchery. He was saying that consumerism, elitism, classism, materialism - all of it was bad and vapid and dangerous and reckless. Fitzgerald had no idea that Wall Street was going to crash, but if you read the Great Gatsby he basically predicts the GREAT depression. Maybe that's the key problem that the movie - the novel doesn't really translate well into movie form. Half of the beauty of the Great Gatsby is Fitzgerald's writing.
 
Economics is like 90% of the reason I love the book (the other 10% is Nick). I've done so much research in regards to the book and did a 10 minute presentation on economic cycles, economic bubbles, and how 1929 was similar to 2008. To see all of the intellectual value of the Great Gatsby reduced to a vapid, shallow, materialistic love story...

And then you'll learn why most of the characters are unlikable and that's okay. And the actual point of the book.
 
But I could never consider the Great Gatsby dull or slow. Depressing? Yes. An accurate reflection of society? Yes.
